Hulloooo!
I realised today i 'stopped' doing stuff i enjoy doing... and painting...i miss my silly creatures and stuff... So now ive found myself again i hope to perk up a bit. also kudos to the daily game art blog, i want to contribute as much as i can, cos ive been in a swirl of omg im bored lately... i need to do much more and these lil paints today have re confirmed i can do it :)

Im trying to gear up my environment practises in order to pull off some decent concepts. I hae started them yet they look pants and i refuse to show anyone till they are slightly presentable. They are 'paint overs' of whiebox renders, and this technique is pretty cool... i must use it in future, planning senes in 3d then going over them.
uhh yh so away from that like i said ive kinda rediscovered what i like doing... and i wish to refine.

Mum is a Taurean, and was also born in teh year of the Ox. She works very hard, and is a real super mum. All my pics of burden animals i dedicate to her!!
All speedpaints taking no more than 10mins each. Painter artist oils default brush :)
I was inspired to do these by a book about bullfighting. I bought it for teh photography, but they make out the animals are pure evil, and that they look at eachother ready to kill eachother, which is absolute BUll in itself, as these animals are gorgeous and friendly. My uncle in ireland has a back yard that connects to a farmers field, that of which commonly has cows, and sometimes a bull. When i was 11 i think, i stood on teh gate and the bull approached me. he was lovely, he wasnt aggresive, nothing. He let me scratch his face and neck and he really didnt mind. also (hopefully if fb has saved my comments) i mentioned a video on teh internet of a pair of spectators seeing to the bull sin their pens, and just how much they loved a good ear scratch.
And ive always said, every animal loves a scratch behind the ears. considering it know what one is.

Bradgate Final
For this one i tried to encorperate that natural spectrum that seems to be apparent in totaly 'natural' scenery, that includes no man made objects for example. (i have recently seen something about what is 'natural' and i now have a new belief that everything is actualy natural... ill leave that for another blog post...)

OH also forget to mention, i made sure i used the golden ratio on the train final, i just screen shotted the corel painte grid and used it to compose the image. im keen on it, yet id love some feedback to see if it reads well with you peeps :)
I really like teh effect sharpening has on my lough final. i was gonna say something else about it but HEY my memory is real bad and ill update if i remember lol

Creativity, INFINITY, and contemporary Art... (oh and philosophy?)
This may cause some headaches, depending on how you take this information in! be warned my dears...
(I have bracketed numbers wthin some paragraphs, please read the brackets at the bottom of the post as its essential to what im trying to get at!)
For this entry i would like to explain why i accept all forms of art, in particular contemporary and abstract, so long as they are not harmful!
In order to explain properly i must first describe my views on creativity, and how i believe it is infact infinate.
A quote from wikipedia 'Creativity is a mental and social process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the creative mind between existing ideas or concepts. Creativity is fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight. An alternative conception of creativeness is that it is simply the act of making something new'
So, in my opinion, creating new things is a daily occurance. i dont believe creativity is strictly for certain types of groups or people (e.g artists designers...). I believe it exists infinately with all things beings and objects, and ill attempt to explain why, this is where it may get confusing for the reader.
So, everyday, we do something completely different to what we did yesterday. No day is exactly the same, and never has been. When i think of this, i think of it from the most obvious differences to the day before, right down to where those little atoms are placed. For example, one day you could be golfing, then the next you decide to go snowboarding. okay, totaly different days. Example two, you sit in a chair, which is fixated in a room, and you lie back, and sleep in it all day, from 1pm til 7pm. The next day, you do the same thing, on the fixated chair (1) for the same hours. Now, there is absolutely no chance, that your body is in the exact same position, inch for inch, centimetre for centimetre, atom for atom... etc. therefore that day is totaly different to the last, and the next you might move the chair by a micromillion millimetre...
This is where infinity comes in. I believe there is an infinate amount of combinitions of absolutely everything in existance. This is why i can accept all forms of art. of course, in this lifetime (2) we will never get to see these infinate amounts of combinations, because there is no 'time' (3). So we needn't worry. However, in our every day lives, we have choices. We could place our cup bang in the middle of the coaster, or we could have placed in a centimetre out, and so on, do you catch my drift now?
This makes for an infinate amount of combinations, read my (3) paragraph as i attempt to shortly explain my theory on time, and why i think its just an illusion.
Now, to the art...
In the past, only certain things were acceptable. We were taught what is, and what isnt, what is good what is bad. We have been controlled for a very long time, and to an extent, if not worse, still are today.
however, we see people expressing themselves more and more in 'unnacceptable' ways, (now, if its a harmful expression, then of course it is unacceptable) BUT, we do get people for example, dressing extravagantly, dressing to shock, etc, we get artwork that is made to shock, and to annoy and to invike various feelings within us.
But why should anything that is not harmful be unacceptable? Im not for harmful things at all, im talking about people in their ability to be themselves and create whatever they like, as long as it is not harming anybody, being, phycicaly or mentaly.
there may be things that are supposed to invoke upsetting emotions within us, however if they harm us or any living thing, that for me is when it becomes unacceptable, but as far as i know, this rarely happens. The perfect example of this is the artist 'Vargas', who, exhibited a very poorly dog in a gallery, chained to a wall, in the name of fine art. Michael said to us yr2's that in fine art you can make whatever the hell you like, as long as it has a story behind it. Vargas's 'story' "I let him die of hunger in the sight of everyone, as if the death of a poor dog was a shameless media show in which nobody does anything but to applaud or to watch disturbed. In the place that the dog was exposed remain a metal cable and a cord. The dog was extremely ill and did not want to eat, so in natural surroundings it would have died anyway; thus they are all poor dogs: sooner or later they die or are killed". In my books, this is unacceptable, amd it did cause outrage. I believe this is what the artist was trying to do. And under the name of fine art, that was his 'excuse'. to others however, it might be totaly acceptable, if it has the fine art label attached to it, because some may even think that if somethings fine art it becomes acceptable.
I believe then that creativity, in its infinacy, is art, and so, everything can be viewed as art, because in essence, as long as something is not harmful, there is no reason is should be viewed as unacceptable, because anything is possible, because of these infinate combinations of everything that exist. dust on your skirting boards could be art, because it has manifested just as that hideous colourful picture did. 'the dust exists now as remains of dirt and bugs that exist within this environment' 'this colourful peice came about while i was pissed last night and had a dream i about disco balls'. its the same thing. we are essentialy creators, we build, we write, we make art, we do alot of things us humans. Thus everything is possible, and if you would like to name it art then so be it. even a dog suffering could be called art, but is actualy unacceptable because the dog was left to suffer. I totaly contradict myself because i do eat meat, yet it wasnt me that killed the animal. also i only eat halal meat, because i know a prayer is said for the animal. (4)
Next i will explain my love for traditional forms of art, and how that may even contradict what i have said here.. ill need to clear my mind for that first. I accept contemporary art, because i find many things in shapes, colours, and im amazed myself at how people can come up with such things sometimes, and that i know that no matter how many things are thought of, there will always be something else totaly different that you can create.

1 - Thats not to say that what you did before 1pm and after 7pm was the same, it just wouldnt be. assume here that 1pm to 7 is one day, continuing to the next. even if it was a manikin in the chair, there would be dust and all sorts that will inevitably change even if it is by the micrometre. 2 - I believe in 'something' after death, not sure what, as i have not died before so i couldnt tell you XD. the reason i believe so is through research and my own instincts. many regression hypnotists report clients saying that they remember dying, and saying you get to review your whole life and decide what to do next. also those who have experienced near death experiences, many have said they were able to be in multiple places at the same time, with multiple people, and that they remember absolutely everything from their life up to that point. Also that this reality isjust vibration, science itself acknowledges that. Just imagine what we culd do if we learnt to manipulate these vibrations? (e.g the hypnotist who programmed a volunteer to not see his daughter. his daughter stood in front of him, and he could read a watch placed behind her back. of course that could be a farce, but compared to everything i have researched in the past i keep an open mind and believe that this is true) seeing is believing. I believe we are all one conciousness experiencing this reality, as a human, and when we die, we move onward. if you want me to explain further just ask me cos i couldnt do it in this post!
3 - I believe time is an illusion we have een made to accept. but everything is an illusion because everything is decyphered in our brains. all is vibrational information being decyphered continuously. I have had mornings where i have been in a rush, and it has taken me 20mins to get to my bus stop. 4 - Im at war with myself about eating animals, but i do believe in spirit, and that this is just an experience. as humans we have the power to kill animals as we please, but animals are innocent and only know love. when we kill them, if it is not in love then its not acceptable. perhaps slaughteres do kill in love, but i know that halal meat is 'blessed'. i dont think the holy books were written for just a really good fairy tale read.

Katherine Valentine
My first Katherine Valentine pic.
This is really a foundation, i have decided, because i have not really concepted her, this is my version of her, rawly from my mind. despite that she isnt exactly how i see her, i know concepting will help me portray that better. I plan to concept teh characters or a few of them as the year goes along, and hopefully id like to have them all done before christmas.
As for the pic, i feel she might look a bit too mature, you? i know since ages ago, humans look older for their age THESE days, so who knows what it could be like in THOSE days....? (well no excuses really lol)
(also her hand is out there as the plan was to draw dog next to her and she would have it rested behind his ears. i dont think i will do that now as id like to develop her further.)
I have an annoyiing habit of being to detailed to soon, and id love to kick the habit. I keep painting everything 'up' im sections. When i start concepting i hope to start braking the habit lol and be able to bring teh paintint literaly from the canvas all the way to the final details... without being so sectiony.
I would upload my scene concepts only they are on another machine!! (Doh!)

Chris's Teaching Method, Perfect 'colour de-programming'!! and a thanks lol
been meaning to post on this topic for ages!
I suppose this is essentially feedback for Chris, and my overview of the most 'amazing' part of his teaching in general, for me. When i say amazing, i mean how much what i can see around me has changed, (practicly everything) since he started teaching us.
Today Chris went over the 'symbols' part of our old education briefly. That is, that in school we are taught that the grass is green, and leaves are green, and the sea is blue... and that a brick is red and rectangular... you get the idea XD
Basicaly only since i started uni did i realise that this was indeed how i had been taught. I love uni lessons so much because they are so different to what school has (or rather didnt...) taught.
This is where i get to the programming part... This is just a way to explain what im on about...
You can compare a human being to a computer in that we are taught that this is right, this is wrong, this happens because of this, etc etc.
From an early age, we have these 'symbols' 'programmed' into us as kids, and only now (well last year to be precise) do i realise how wrong the beeps were!!
Chris is literaly de-programming that in us, and my goodness is the world a prettier place.
Its so strange, and gives such a refreshing view of the world around myself. EVERYTHING is just so vibrant again, and so damn colourful!!! And the best part is, there is an infinate combination of views and combinations fo everything, every colour, every scene, every day! I only see this now since he has taught us how to see again really lol
No day is the same, no cloud is the same, grass is not green at all, and the sky is not blue.
I find myself seeing the full spectrum in every view, that perfectly natural balance of all colours.
To be honest i cant explain how amazed i am. how amazing the world looks now.
That is unless my eyes are going into overdrive, but i highly doubt this, because once upon a time, i was taught that things are solidly what they are and cannot be anything else, when they BLADDY well can and ARE!!!!!!!!!

Mortal Engines Chudleigh Pomroy and a little songy!

I started reading (at snail pace) Mortal Engines a week ago, and ive decided to paint each character as i see them as i go through the book. The first I decided to draw is Pomroy!
I now have a super cool scanner which i scanned the inital sketch and decided to paint over the top. here are the results!
Please critique much apprciated.
My personal judgment:- Its not realistic enough but i look forward to developing that. Im not sure if i an see a style emerging. His hand was gloved because i went about painting it in a sectiony type of way and ended up getting his hands the wrong colours. so i thought hey it could be a digital library glove.... from the future... I cant wait to start drawing drapery in Chris's lessons because i really need it. Im going to go to the market and buy some cheap material so i can start now!
I really need to stock up on real resources!!
and i need to do backgrounds need need need need.
If possible please critique on facebook because its easier to get too! (as this blog i keep forgetting my password and it gets tedious lolz)

A likkle update
Ive been very absent, so i thought id update this here blog that i have neglected :(
Im working on my environment summer project, i chose the power plant. so far ive been doing concept work, (yes, 2D *slap*) and bashing photoshop into submission (well, doodling ike a bee-hotch getting things to look how i want them too) im still baffled as to how to 'design' a level, as that is what i want to do. my current vision is 'destroyed/old industrial times infinity oil rig slash gas station.' im starting to panic a bit about 3d work, i finaly found someone who owns an old transit so im going to do that again, a tree or 3, and im going to texture that rocking horse.
one needs ro get ones arse in gear. one also is looking for a job...
also, for my assesments i was reminded i need to tighten up my blog task entries, so they are in the making, and im sorry i havent uploaded them sooner. and i cant believe i was so confused as to what a game engine actualy 'is'. i always thought it was an undercover ninja cop part of the game that nobody ever sees.....#
ill upload what ive been upto in sections so you now where i am with it. im tempted to do the sweet shop and the antiques shop too. may take a fancy twist with that one, because a recent dream i had was in an only worn down warehouse with victorian toys and antiques in it. may just model that.
im also going to post about my experience at chris's gifted and talented week, where he invited me and cameron to help him out, as i have been thinking about teaching. for now all i can say is it looks like hard effing work. but it was fun.
im also going to post, chapter by chapter (dont let that put you off) what i think of this world and whats going on in it. (and no, dont expect some sort of f the world rant! im rather opposite) i got some pretty deep thoughts, but i always keep an open mind, and i, like many, am open to new ideas and always both sides of the story. im going to go into all sorts, including my theories on where humans actualy came from, and why i think birds have so much range in plumage!!!!
(p.s, no damn missing link is going to fool me. if its a lemur like skeleton, then duh, are lemuirs not the missing link? i dont believe in darwin, any of it to be honest. you cant proove that a monkey became a man, really, i never bought it from the age of 10ish...)

Game Music
They say everything is made of sinewaves.. or sound frequencies, and this has been prooven over and over. Therefore sound is all around us and an essential part of life!
So, what happens when music and sound is used alongside anything? For me, sound enhances ANY experience. Things become bigger and more enjoyable... I can feel more is theres a bluddy' good tune or noise in the background.
I match up my music to scenes as I walk along or sit on the bus. and it just makes everything special in another way. there is always noise.
My favourite soundtracks for games have always been of the tekken series, zone of the enders, rock raiders, MGS, Streets of Rage and sonic 1. Even 16-bit music could do magic. I remember loving 16-bit music on other megadrive games. I recently bought Lego Rock Raiders ps1 game, just for the soundtrack.
Because sound is such a big part of life, I think that you really cant make anything epic without it. Even when looking at a photo I can imagine some sort of tune to go along with it. is that just me?
The way MGS would shriek at you if you were seen by an enemy, or the way the beautiful labyrinth music of sonic 1, would be rudely interupted with a 10 second countdown to drowning riff... those were moments that made you panic. and in your rush to save the day, you'd end up dying. Then in teh back of your head, you dont want to hear that noise EVER again, for you know poor sonic is going to drown!!
The beauty of the ZOE music, is the way it perfectly matches the futuristic scenery of the game. I've always loved japanese trance, and that game just made it better for me!
Even the sound of wind (through your hair) in shadow of the colossus, the galloping horse, the water, just those natural sounds, all make towards that slightly more realistic gaming experience.
Of course, as games get better, so will sound and effects. I havent been dissapointed yet!!

Games Culture
This sounds like an interesting subject. I would consider myself part of the 'online' games culture, as I havent had fun with an offline game for a while. I find these days I really dont enjoy all these 'later' titles, even if I do enjoy online play, just for playing competitivley.
Today compared to when I was young, this culture has become rather humourous. Many 'Net Speak' or 'Leet talk' phrases/memes have popped up, and only because of the digital world that many people now have as a part of their lives. Whats great is that, because alot of people enjoy gaming these days, most of these people undertsand these phrases, derived from elements of gameplay, simply because its like a common language between everyone. In a world full of hate and war (still would you believe :( ) gaming, and online gaming is a form of unity between anyone who plays. You may get the odd t*** who refuses to get along, but mostly online competitors play with a friendly outlook, and through the gore and killing and blood gushing and violence that may occur in an online game, the game usualy ends with a 'nice game' 'well played' 'you owned us, nice one' attitude. The slang and gaming jargon that comes from the digi world, is understood in the real world too, and can make for funny conversation sometimes!!
The internet brings people together, which Is what i think the world needs. We are all human after all. I wasnt expecting such warm reception from the different parts of the world on socom. But in general people play together nicely. And yes you will always get the one who will try and start a fight, but the better always overcomes the bad.
I think the internet is becoming an essential these days. More and more people are seeing its benefits, and having fun with it. As well as this though there is always a bad side. You will get gamers who really dont have anything else to do, and live on their PC's, and in their PC world only, that dont know what other joys in life there are. WOW players for e.g. I have never known a WoW player who wasnt playing it 99% of the time... i sometimes feel games promote 'living in your digital world' so as to keep you blinded from what is actualy happening in the world. like the TV itself.
I certainly dont play games as much as i used to. I just feel they arent as good as they used to be, and the more realistic they become the more undesirable they get for me. like ive said before, i dont like violent games, they make me sad, that you would want to kill some-one and look at what their brain looked like if it was blown to bits. This is why I love fantasy games, but I havent come across any good ones for years.

The games Industry
Currently, The UK is officialy in recession. This fairly recent turn of events is also effecting the rest of the planet.
Developers and Publishers are having to cut back on expenses, and of course understand that this year will be difficult. With rumours that nothing will get any better until at least 2010, its rather a scary situation.
This isnt to say that the games industry will suffer completely!
The pounds weakness, though not good, means that the UK can trade easy with other countries. Also, another upper hand the UK has is the game developers themselfs. Many UK games workforces are at least 80% qualified to degree level, which is always a good thing!

It made me feel pretty happy about where I want to be. It sounds like the perfect place for me, where people are less interested in material rewards than they are in what they are actualy making and doing. And they have fun!!
Threats to the industry, the most recent, must be the reccession. Despite this i doubt it will have a huge impact. I know that companies are cutting down on recruitment, but it wont last forever. As well as that, one that has been going on for a while, is piracy and 'hacking' of games. I feel piracy will last for a long time at least. Why? Because clever people normaly figure a way to break sonething for the 'greater good!'. Piracy doesnt just effect computer games of course, but it is still a big issue. Much money can be lost, and not much is being done about it.

now, theres no crawlies in this either, however the video is rather weird/creepy. Well I find it so...
Its this whole 'doll' thing. Any animated doll i find weird. I forget the term for a theory, that the more human-like a robot becomes the more a real human will not like it or feel unsettled with it, when the smarter an in-human like robot becomes the more you love it. Strange stuff. (Ive searched but cant find the correct term!)
